Description
Turkey sweet potato chili is a hearty, healthy one-pot meal made with lean ground turkey, tender sweet potatoes, and a richly spiced tomato broth. It’s comforting, nutritious, and perfect for weeknight dinners or meal prep.
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 lb ground turkey
- 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 1 (15 oz) can black beans (optional), drained and rinsed
- 1 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Sauté onion until soft, about 5 minutes.
- Add garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add ground turkey, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned.
- Stir in sweet potatoes, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook for 2–3 minutes.
- Add tomato paste, diced tomatoes, and broth. Stir to combine.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 25–30 minutes until sweet potatoes are tender.
- If using black beans, stir them in during the last 10 minutes of cooking.
- Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve with toppings like avocado, lime juice, or cilantro if desired.
Notes
- Chili is great for meal prep—it tastes even better the next day.
- Use ground chicken or beef as substitutes for turkey.
- Can be made vegetarian by omitting meat and adding extra beans or lentils.
- Adjust spice level with cayenne pepper, jalapeños, or hot sauce.
- Freezes well for up to 3 months; reheat with a splash of broth if needed.
