Description

Tennessee onions bake is a cheesy, comforting Southern side dish made with layers of sweet onions, melted cheese, and seasoned butter. It’s easy, affordable, and full of flavor—perfect for cookouts or cozy dinners.

Ingredients

  • 34 large sweet onions (Vidalia or Walla Walla), sliced into thick rings
  • 4 tablespoons butter, cut into thin pats
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or a mix)
  • Optional: 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Slice onions into thick rounds and separate into rings.
  3. Spread onion rings evenly across the bottom of the dish.
  4. Sprinkle garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper over the onions.
  5. Place butter pats evenly on top of the seasoned onions.
  6. Top generously with shredded cheese. Add Parmesan if using.
  7. Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, until onions are tender and cheese is bubbly and golden.
  8. Let rest a few minutes before serving to allow flavors to settle.

Notes

  • Use sweet onions for best flavor, but yellow onions also work.
  • Add a splash of cream or broth before baking for extra richness.
  • For a kick, use pepper jack cheese or sprinkle red pepper flakes.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days; reheat in the oven to maintain crispness.
  • Assemble ahead and refrigerate unbaked for up to 24 hours.
