Tennessee onions bake is a cheesy, comforting Southern side dish made with layers of sweet onions, melted cheese, and seasoned butter. It’s easy, affordable, and full of flavor—perfect for cookouts or cozy dinners.
Ingredients
- 3–4 large sweet onions (Vidalia or Walla Walla), sliced into thick rings
- 4 tablespoons butter, cut into thin pats
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or a mix)
- Optional: 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
- Slice onions into thick rounds and separate into rings.
- Spread onion rings evenly across the bottom of the dish.
- Sprinkle garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper over the onions.
- Place butter pats evenly on top of the seasoned onions.
- Top generously with shredded cheese. Add Parmesan if using.
- Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, until onions are tender and cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Let rest a few minutes before serving to allow flavors to settle.
Notes
- Use sweet onions for best flavor, but yellow onions also work.
- Add a splash of cream or broth before baking for extra richness.
- For a kick, use pepper jack cheese or sprinkle red pepper flakes.
- Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days; reheat in the oven to maintain crispness.
- Assemble ahead and refrigerate unbaked for up to 24 hours.
