Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2.25 tsp active dry yeast
- 0.25 cup granulated sugar
- 0.75 cup brown sugar
- 2 tsp ground ginger
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 0.5 tsp ground nutmeg
- 0.25 tsp ground cloves
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup whole milk
- 0.5 cup unsalted butter, divided
- 1 large egg
- 0.25 cup molasses
- 6 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1.5 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Warm the milk until lukewarm. Stir in yeast and 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar and let sit until foamy.
- Mix in melted butter, egg, molasses, ground ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, remaining sugar, and salt.
- Gradually add flour until a soft dough forms.
- Knead dough until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size.
- Roll dough into a rectangle. Spread with softened butter.
- Mix brown sugar with spices and sprinkle evenly over the dough.
- Roll tightly, slice into rolls, and place in a greased baking dish.
- Let rolls rise again until puffy.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25 minutes until lightly golden.
- Mix cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth.
- Spread frosting over warm rolls and serve.
Notes
- Dough can be prepared the night before and refrigerated.
- Avoid adding too much flour to keep rolls soft.
- Rolls freeze well without frosting.
- Best served warm.
