Description
A grilled cheese sandwich with all the best flavors of pizza—crispy, buttery bread filled with melty cheese, savory pizza sauce, and your favorite toppings.
Ingredients
- ½ cup unsalted butter, very soft
- 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
- 4 slices of bread (sourdough, Italian, or your preferred sturdy bread)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (or sliced mozzarella)
- 4 tablespoons pizza sauce (plus extra for dipping)
- Optional toppings: sliced pepperoni, olives, mushrooms, fresh basil, sliced peppers
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with the grated Parmesan until well combined.
- Spread the Parmesan butter evenly on one side of each bread slice.
- Flip the slices so the buttered side is facing outward, and on the inside of two slices, spread about 1 tablespoon of pizza sauce.
- Divide the mozzarella cheese and optional toppings between those two slices (on the sauce side).
- Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side facing out, to form sandwiches.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat. When warm, place the sandwiches in the pan and cook for about 3–4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Remove from heat and let rest for a minute. Slice diagonally and serve, with extra pizza sauce on the side for dipping.
Notes
- Use a sturdy bread that can hold up to grilling and fillings without getting soggy.
- You can use garlic butter instead of plain butter for extra flavor.
- If using many toppings, keep them thin so the sandwich doesn’t become too bulky or difficult to grill evenly.
- To reheat leftovers, crisp them up in a skillet or toaster oven rather than a microwave to preserve the crunch.
- For a vegetarian version, skip the meat toppings or use plant-based alternatives.
