Description

A fresh and vibrant Italian tomato salad made with ripe tomatoes, red onion, basil, and a simple olive oil vinaigrette for a light and flavorful side dish.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups ripe tomatoes, sliced or chopped
  • 1/4 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar or balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Wash the tomatoes and slice them into wedges or thick slices.
  2. Place the tomatoes in a large bowl.
  3. Add the thinly sliced red onion and chopped fresh basil.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil and red wine vinegar or balsamic vinegar.
  5. Pour the dressing over the tomatoes.
  6. Gently toss the salad until the ingredients are evenly coated.
  7. Season with salt and black pepper.
  8. Let the salad sit for a few minutes before serving so the flavors blend.

Notes

  • Heirloom, Roma, or vine-ripened tomatoes provide the best flavor.
  • Fresh mozzarella can be added for a caprese-style variation.
  • Sliced cucumbers or olives add extra texture and flavor.
  • A drizzle of balsamic glaze adds richness before serving.
  • Allowing the salad to rest briefly enhances the flavor.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 1 day.
