Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups long grain white rice
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 1/2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese (optional)
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add sliced onions and cook slowly for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown.
- Stir in garlic powder, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper.
- Add uncooked rice to the skillet and stir to coat with onion mixture.
- Transfer mixture to a baking dish and pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Stir gently to combine.
- Cover tightly with foil and bake for 30–35 minutes, until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed.
- If using cheese, remove foil, sprinkle cheese on top, and bake uncovered for 5 minutes until melted.
- Fluff rice with a fork and garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

- Caramelizing onions fully enhances sweetness and depth of flavor.
- Substitute vegetable broth for a vegetarian version.
- Add sliced mushrooms for extra texture.
- For stovetop method, simmer covered on low until rice is tender.
