Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lbs ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
- 2 eggs
- 3/4 cup bread crumbs
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced and caramelized
- 1 packet French onion soup mix or 1 tbsp beef bouillon
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup shredded Swiss or Gruyère cheese
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- Optional: fresh thyme or parsley, for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line or grease a loaf pan.
- Caramelize onions in a skillet over medium-low heat until golden and soft, about 20–25 minutes.
- In a large bowl, mix ground meat, eggs, breadcrumbs, soup mix or bouillon, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, salt, pepper, and half the caramelized onions.
- Press the mixture into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.
- Bake for 40 minutes, then top with shredded cheese and remaining onions.
- Return to oven and bake for 10–15 more minutes, until cheese is bubbly and internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
- Let rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with herbs if desired.
Notes
- Swap in Gruyère for a more traditional flavor or ground turkey for a lighter version.
- Top with beef gravy or onion soup reduction for added richness.
- Form into mini loaves to reduce cooking time.
