Description
French Dip Grilled Cheese is a rich, savory sandwich that combines crispy toasted bread, gooey melted cheese, and thinly sliced roast beef, served with a warm homemade au jus dipping sauce. It’s a comforting twist on two classics—grilled cheese and French dip—that’s perfect for cozy meals.
Ingredients
- For the sandwich:
- 4 slices crusty bread (like sourdough or French bread)
- 6–8 slices thinly sliced roast beef (deli-style or leftover)
- 4 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
- Butter or mayo (for toasting)
- For the au jus (dipping sauce):
- 1 1/2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp soy sauce (optional)
- Black pepper, to taste
- 1 tbsp butter
Instructions
- Make the au jus: In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Sauté garlic for 1–2 minutes.
- Add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, soy sauce (if using), and black pepper. Simmer for 5–10 minutes. Keep warm.
- Butter or mayo one side of each bread slice.
- Assemble the sandwich: On the unbuttered side of one slice, layer cheese, roast beef, and more cheese. Top with the second slice, buttered side out.
- In a skillet over medium heat, grill the sandwich for 3–4 minutes per side, until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Slice and serve hot with a bowl of warm au jus for dipping.
Notes
- Caramelized onions add extra richness inside the sandwich.
- Try Gruyère or mozzarella cheese for a different flavor.
- Use a panini press for extra crispiness.
- Add horseradish or Dijon mustard for heat.
