Description
A simple homemade applesauce made without peeling the apples, cooked until soft and mashed or blended for a smooth, naturally sweet and comforting flavor.
Ingredients
- 6 medium apples
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tablespoons sugar or honey
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
- Wash the apples thoroughly, cut them into chunks, and remove the cores while leaving the peels on.
- Place the apple chunks into a medium saucepan and add water, lemon juice, sugar or honey, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let the apples simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft.
- Mash the softened apples with a potato masher or blend with an immersion blender until the desired smooth or chunky texture is reached.
- Taste the applesauce and adjust sweetness or cinnamon if needed before serving.
Notes
- Add a pinch of nutmeg or cloves for a deeper, warmer flavor.
- Use naturally sweet apples like Fuji or Gala to reduce or skip added sugar.
- Stir in extra lemon juice after cooking for a brighter flavor.
- Blend completely for smooth applesauce or leave slightly chunky for texture.
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- Freeze in small containers for up to 3 months.
- Reheat gently on the stovetop over low heat or microwave in short intervals, stirring between each.
