Description

Cream cheese sugar cookies are soft, chewy, and subtly tangy thanks to cream cheese in the dough. These easy-to-make cookies hold their shape and are perfect plain, frosted, or decorated for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and cream cheese until smooth and creamy.
  4. Add the granulated sugar and continue to beat until light and fluffy.
  5. Mix in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until well combined.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  7. Scoop or roll the dough into balls and place on the prepared baking sheets. Press each slightly with your fingers or a flat-bottomed glass.
  8. Bake for 9–11 minutes, until the edges are set and the centers are still soft.
  9. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Roll dough in colored sugar before baking for a festive look.
  • Add lemon or orange zest for a citrus flavor twist.
  • Top cooled cookies with cream cheese frosting or vanilla buttercream if desired.
  • Chill dough before cutting into shapes with cookie cutters for holiday cookies.
  • Freeze baked cookies or raw dough for up to 2 months.
