Description

Chocolate Orange Sandwich Cookies are soft, chewy chocolate cookies paired with a bright, citrusy orange buttercream filling. The rich cocoa flavor and zesty orange center create an irresistible dessert that’s perfect for gifting or sharing.

Ingredients

    • For the cookies:
    • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar
    • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 tablespoon orange zest (from about 1 orange)

  • For the orange buttercream filling:
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/22 cups powdered sugar
  • 12 teaspoons fresh orange zest
  • 12 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and orange zest to the butter mixture and mix until combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  6. Using a small cookie scoop, drop balls of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake for 8–10 minutes, until cookies are set around the edges. Let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. To make the filling: beat the softened butter until smooth, then gradually add powdered sugar. Mix in orange zest, orange juice, vanilla, and a pinch of salt until the buttercream is fluffy and creamy.
  9. Spread or pipe a generous dollop of orange buttercream onto the flat side of one cookie, then top with another cookie to form a sandwich.
  10. Chill the assembled cookies for a few minutes to help the filling set, then serve.

Notes

  • Add mini chocolate chips to the cookie dough for extra texture.
  • For a grown‑up twist, stir in a splash of orange liqueur like Grand Marnier to the buttercream.
  • Dip finished sandwich cookies in melted chocolate and sprinkle with extra orange zest or flaky sea salt for a festive presentation.
  • Chill cookie dough before baking to enhance flavor and make it easier to scoop.
