Description

Chicken Sausage, Broccoli, and Orzo Skillet is a quick and comforting one-pan meal featuring savory chicken sausage, tender broccoli, and creamy orzo. It’s flavorful, easy to make, and perfect for busy weeknights or meal prep.

Ingredients

  • 12 oz fully cooked chicken sausage, sliced into coins
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cups broccoli florets (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup orzo pasta
  • 2 1/2 cups chicken broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tsp lemon zest or 1 tbsp lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced sausage and cook for 4–5 minutes until browned. Remove and set aside.
  2. Add onion to the same skillet and sauté for 3 minutes until soft. Stir in garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
  3. Add dry orzo and toast for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  4. Pour in chicken broth and add broccoli florets. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
  5. Reduce heat, cover, and cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until orzo is tender and most liquid is absorbed.
  6. Return sausage to the pan. Stir and cook for 2–3 more minutes until heated through.
  7. Finish with Parmesan, red pepper flakes, and lemon zest or juice if using. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use raw sausage if preferred—just cook it thoroughly before continuing the recipe.
  • Swap broccoli for other vegetables like spinach, kale, or zucchini.
  • To make it extra creamy, add a splash of cream or cream cheese at the end.
  • For gluten-free, substitute with gluten-free orzo or rice.
