Description

Char Siu Chicken (Chinese BBQ Style) is a sweet, savory, and aromatic dish made with chicken marinated in a rich blend of hoisin, soy sauce, honey, and five spice. Roasted or grilled to perfection, it’s sticky, juicy, and full of classic Chinese BBQ flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1.52 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs (or bone-in)
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey or brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar or Shaoxing wine
  • 1 tsp Chinese five spice powder
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp grated or minced ginger
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • Optional: a few drops red food coloring
  • Optional: chopped scallions and sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, vinegar, five spice, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and food coloring if using.
  2. Place chicken in a zip-top bag or bowl and pour marinade over it. Toss to coat evenly. Cover and marinate for at least 2 hours or overnight in the fridge.
  3. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) or heat grill to medium-high. Line a baking sheet with foil and set a wire rack on top.
  4. Place chicken on the rack and roast for 25–30 minutes, turning and basting with leftover marinade halfway through.
  5. Once chicken is cooked through and slightly charred, remove from oven and let rest a few minutes.
  6. Slice and garnish with chopped scallions and sesame seeds. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Use drumsticks or wings for a finger-food twist.
  • Substitute pork tenderloin for a traditional Char Siu variation.
  • Add chili garlic sauce or sriracha for heat.
  • Grilling adds a smoky depth of flavor.
  • Great for rice bowls, wraps, or salads.
