Description
Char Siu Chicken (Chinese BBQ Style) is a sweet, savory, and aromatic dish made with chicken marinated in a rich blend of hoisin, soy sauce, honey, and five spice. Roasted or grilled to perfection, it’s sticky, juicy, and full of classic Chinese BBQ flavor.
Ingredients
- 1.5–2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs (or bone-in)
- 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp honey or brown sugar
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar or Shaoxing wine
- 1 tsp Chinese five spice powder
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp grated or minced ginger
- 1/2 tsp sesame oil
- Optional: a few drops red food coloring
- Optional: chopped scallions and sesame seeds for garnish
Instructions
- In a bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, vinegar, five spice, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and food coloring if using.
- Place chicken in a zip-top bag or bowl and pour marinade over it. Toss to coat evenly. Cover and marinate for at least 2 hours or overnight in the fridge.
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) or heat grill to medium-high. Line a baking sheet with foil and set a wire rack on top.
- Place chicken on the rack and roast for 25–30 minutes, turning and basting with leftover marinade halfway through.
- Once chicken is cooked through and slightly charred, remove from oven and let rest a few minutes.
- Slice and garnish with chopped scallions and sesame seeds. Serve hot.
Notes
- Use drumsticks or wings for a finger-food twist.
- Substitute pork tenderloin for a traditional Char Siu variation.
- Add chili garlic sauce or sriracha for heat.
- Grilling adds a smoky depth of flavor.
- Great for rice bowls, wraps, or salads.
