Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- For the gravy:
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 8 oz cremini or white mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1/2 cup red wine (optional)
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp cornstarch slurry (optional, for thickening)
Instructions
- Whisk together ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Shape the mixture into oval patties, about ½-inch thick, and set aside.
- In a skillet over medium-high heat, sear the patties in a little oil until browned and cooked through, about 4–5 minutes per side. Transfer them to a plate.
- In the same skillet, melt butter and add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Cook until tender and caramelized.
- Stir in the minced garlic, then add beef broth, red wine (if using), Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Scrape up the browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
- Taste the sauce, season as needed, and let it simmer until it slightly reduces. For a thicker sauce, whisk in the cornstarch slurry.
- Return the patties to the skillet, spoon the gravy over them, and simmer together for a couple of minutes until heated through.
Notes
- Add fresh thyme or rosemary to the patties for an herby twist.
- For extra depth in the sauce, try adding a splash of heavy cream or an extra dash of Dijon mustard.
- For a southwestern version, swap cremini mushrooms for roasted poblanos and add smoked paprika.
- Serve with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or creamy polenta, and pair with steamed green beans or roasted carrots.
